The Stories We Hold

Here are the stories housed within the fabrics of this patchwork skirt:

Story 1: I felt so beautiful in this wedding dress. It was a spaghetti strapped no back dress and so very elegant with three light layers of silk hugging me. The weight of the silver glass bugle beads was divine; like a warm hug. I danced all night.

Story 2: I have a vague memory of using that white sheet to make an outdoor "tent" for our girls. I think we clipped it between a tree and a picnic table on a windy day for a tea party-ish sort of playtime.  The sheet was already well loved and didn't quite survive that windy adventure. Thanks for giving it new life!

Here's a haiku version of that memory (using the Japanese 12-syllable form):

a makeshift cloud

on a windy day--

teatime joy

Story 3: This is the shirt I was wearing when my husband proposed to me on his birthday 20 years ago.  It has so much sentimental value, but I wasn't wearing it anymore.

Story 4: Both fabrics were purchased at a fabric outlet in Stone Mountain, Georgia called Fabric World, while we lived in Atlanta, Georgia. You could purchase dead stock and remnants for so cheap and I loved to walk around and load up my cart with thrift store prices!

The fabric with script writing was used to line a bag that I made for myself and used it to carry around diaper bag supplies and my purse.

The softer geometric print was used to make toddler clothes. I can’t remember now if I made pants or shorts but I was regularly making toddler clothes for my first baby, and giving them out to friends at that time. I wish I remembered the story of who they were given to but I know I was looking for funky and soft fabrics for chunky toddler legs!

Story 5: The fabric from my going away reception dress was purchased on Melrose in HLWD in 1989. I fell MADLY IN LOVE with the skirt & top when I saw it and had to get it for my special day.
